Sally Chang, piano teacher
About

Sally Chang

Accredited music teacher. Twenty years across classical and contemporary piano. Based in Mount Ommaney, Brisbane.

Sally has taught piano to beginners and experienced players alike. Over that time she has guided students through graded music examinations and competitions, and has taught just as many who simply wanted to play for pleasure.

Lessons are one to one, in her teaching studio, and can be taught in English or Mandarin Chinese.

How she teaches

Enjoyment first, and the technique follows

Sally’s approach places a strong emphasis on enjoyment and on building confidence. That is achieved through focused work on three things.

Reading ability

So a student can pick up music they have never seen and play it.

Listening skills

So they can hear when something is not right, and fix it themselves.

Finger technique

So the hands can do what the ear and the eye already understand.

Music theory is taught in conjunction with the playing, rather than as a separate subject. Students generally find it makes more sense when it is attached to the piece in front of them.

Who she teaches

Children and adults, from first notes to senior grades

There is no requirement to sit exams and no requirement to perform, though both are there for anyone who wants them. Lessons are paced to the student, because some children move quickly and want to be stretched while others need a slower, gentler build. Both are normal and both are planned for.

Families come to Sally mostly by word of mouth, and that has been true for twenty years.
